What is a solar panel and how does it work?

A solar panel is a device made up of many solar cells, usually made from silicon, that converts sunlight into electricity. When sunlight hits the solar cells, it knocks electrons loose from atoms, creating an electric current. This process is called the photoelectric effect. The solar panel produces direct current (DC) electricity, which is then converted into alternating current (AC) by an inverter for use in homes or businesses.
